Matilda the Musical IS coming to New Zealand

The waitlist for the Auckland season is now open!

It’s official, Road Dahl’s Matilda is coming to Auckland in its mega-successful musical formation.

With music by Tim Minchin and book by Dennis Kelly, the hit production has recently taken nearby Australia by storm after becoming one of the best-loved stage shows on Broadway and London’s West End.

We’re excited to now be welcoming the show to New Zealand, with the musical set to open at The Civic, Auckland this coming August.

Matilda The Musical is the most awarded musical in Australian theatre history, directed by Tony Award-winner Matthew Warchus.

Based on the beloved novel by best-selling author Roald Dahl (Charlie And The Chocolate Factory, Fantastic Mr Fox), the musical retells the story of an extraordinary girl who, armed with a vivid imagination and a sharp mind, dares to take a stand and change her own destiny.

Royal Shakespeare Company executive director, Catherine Mallyon, said: “We are thrilled to bring our production of Matilda The Musical to New Zealand and we hope audiences here will take Matilda to their hearts, as they have done in Stratford-upon-Avon, London, the United States of America, Canada and Australia.”

Adding: “We loved being here in 2007 with Trevor Nunn’s productions of King Lear and The Seagull, with Ian McKellen, and a return visit is long overdue.”

Meanwhile, Auckland Tourism, Events and Economic Development’s Head of Major Events, Charmaine Ngarimu, says on the news: “World-class musicals like Matilda have the ability to delight and entertain not only Aucklanders, but also the thousands of visitors from around New Zealand which they attract,” she says.

“We are proud to have this modern musical exclusively here in Auckland after its sell-out Australian tour.”
