Ten of the Best: Cold Chisel

When it comes to Aussie rock, it does not get much better than Cold Chisel.

The legendary group is set to perform at the Villa Maria Estate Winery on December 6.

Cold Chisel is one of the most successful and well known rock acts of all time. Their hit songs make up the soundtrack to lives of most of us and the tracks remain as awesome today as they were in the 1970s and 80s.

Cold Chisel, led by lead singer Jimmy Barnes, is perhaps the best example of quintessential Australian rock. Alongside Jimmy Barnes will be guitarist and vocalist Ian Moss, keyboardist Don Walker, bass guitarist Phil Small and Charley Drayton on drums, following the death of founding member Steve Prestwich.

One of the most unique things about Cold Chisel is that every single member was also a songwriter. And incredibly each different member can take credit for having written at least one of the band’s biggest hits. Don Walker was the band’s most-prolific hit-writer, penning songs such as Khe Sanh, Cheap Wine, Standing on the Outside and Saturday Night. However Ian Moss wrote Bow River, Steve Prestwich contributed When the War is Over and Forever Now, Phil Small wrote My Baby and Notion for You while Jimmy Barnes was responsible for Rising Sun and You Got Nothing I Want.

The incredible talent of the group – both as musicians and singers as well as songwriters – cannot be denied.

What is even more incredible about Cold Chisel is the fact that they were only together for a relatively short period of time. The group’s debut album was released in 1978 and they split up in 1983. Yet in that time Cold Chisel had a profound impact on the national psyche and produced a back catalogue of hits that seems to go on forever.
