New Music: Robinson

We're shining a spotlight on the best up and coming New Zealand artists set to dominate 2019. Meet Nelson singer-songwriter delivering pop perfection Robinson.

Ticketmaster New Music is your one-stop destination to discover the best emerging live acts before they explode. These are the artists we’re expecting to make waves in the live music scene, and we want you to know about them first.

Nelson singer-songwriter Robinson is the next huge pop artist set to explode out of New Zealand, and you need to get to know her now.

It has been an incredible rise for Robinson since releasing her debut single Don’t You Forget About Me in May 2017. It was enough to garner label interest, and by early 2018 she had a solid team behind her. It wasn’t until the release of Nothing To Regret though that heads really started turning her way.

The huge burst of pop perfection was streamed on Spotify more than 300,000 times within two days of its release, and a year on it’s cracked almost 62 million plays and being Gold-certified in New Zealand.

While Robinson says she essentially came out of the womb wanting to sing, it wasn’t until her teenage years that she discovered her knack for songwriting. Citing influences including Jeff Buckley, Stevie Nicks, and SZA, she imagines her music in colours of blue red and purple – blue for the emotional side, reds for the dancier moments, and purple where the two intersect.

Fresh single Karma saw Robinson burst into 2019, following a slew of success in 2018 including receiving two nominations at the New Zealand Vodaphone Music Awards for Breakthrough Artist of the Year and Single of the Year, finishing a successful UK and European tour supporting Hayley Kiyoko, supporting Australian musician Dean Lewis, and performing her own debut Australian headline shows.

With each release, she continues to prove that she is a true force in the pop music scene – not just here in New Zealand, but on a global scale.

Essential Listening

Robinson – Nothing To Regret

As Robinson described, “The song was based around living for the weekend. A lot of my friends are at uni and are now working, and I’m a musician so my hours are completely different from theirs. It’s [about] waiting for that time when everyone  wants to dance and have fun and forget about all the little shitty feelings.”

Robinson – Don’t You Forget About Me

Upon release, Robinson said, “It’s a song about the vulnerability of losing yourself in order to truly find yourself. Letting go of the worry we may feel at times over other people’s opinions of the changes we go through as we get older, but coming to realise the ones that truly care about us won’t judge us or forget us.”

Robinson – Karma

Robinson says, “It’s about opening up your heart to someone who ends up taking that for granted, then when you end things, they try and come back like nothing ever happened. [It] explores the pain of early heartbreak – you can’t break someone’s heart and then act like you didn’t.”
