Five of the Best… Maroon 5
Maroon 5 is one of the biggest bands in the world right now and they are headed our way in October.
Following the release of the group’s highly anticipated fifth studio album, V, Maroon 5 announced a World Tour that will see them perform at Vector Arena on October 3. Adam Levine and co have a unique sound and also have a knack for writing hit songs that are loved the world over. To celebrate the band’s upcoming performance we have made Maroon 5 the subject of this edition of Five of the Best where we count down our top five favourite hits. It is always a difficult task, particularly when you are talking about one of the most popular bands in the world. We hope you enjoy our selections!
5 Payphone
These days it seems to be the done thing to feature a guest artist on most songs. In sticking with the theme, Maroon 5’s 2012 hit Payphone features a rap verse written and performed by Wiz Khalifa. The catchy pop song was one of 2012’s highest selling singles with more than 9.5 million copies sold. The song was a chart success and earned Maroon 5 its fourth number one single on the Billboard charts in America. Adam Levine is well known for his unique falsetto and it is perfectly demonstrated in Payphone. The song is also accompanied by a big budget music video that is more like a mini-movie – check it out below.
4 This Love
This Love appeared on Maroon 5’s debut album, Songs About Jane, and while it was not the band’s debut single, it was the song that launched Maroon 5 on the world stage. This Love was a chart success and is a very fine example of Maroon 5’s early work, which has a pop rock vibe. The song was written by Maroon 5’s lead singer Adam Levine following a break up. This Love won Maroon 5 a Grammy Award and earned them praise from many influential musicians including John Mayer and Kanye West, who remixed the song in 2004. We love this song and feel it is a quintessential Maroon 5 track.
3 Sugar
Maroon 5’s latest smash hit is the lead single of the band’s new album, V. Sugar continues Maroon 5’s foray into a more pop-electro sound, which is vastly different from the heavier rock pop sound of the early days. Sugar was an instant hit and has charted well all over the world – in fact it continues to chart well. Sugar is accompanied by a very clever film clip that has everyone talking; it features Maroon 5 performing surprise gigs at various weddings around LA, an idea that came to them based on the film Wedding Crashers. The song is great fun and we think it will become one of Maroon 5’s greatest hits. The film clip is definitely worth a look as well. The swearing bride is our favourite – you can watch it below.
2 She Will Be Loved
She Will Be Loved is a pop ballad that featured on Maroon 5’s debut album, Songs About Jane. The song is a perfect example of the band’s early work and exhibits Adam Levine’s unique voice beautifully. She Will Be Loved was a chart success around the world including in Australia where it reached number one on the ARIA charts. Maroon 5 love to use the accompanying music video to tell a story and the video for She Will Be Loved is no different. The film clip features Kelly Preston as the object of Levine’s fantasy; click below to watch. She Will Be Loved is a great song and is without a doubt one of Maroon 5’s best hits, making it a very deserving number two on our list of the group’s best songs.
1 Moves Like Jagger
In 2011, Adam Levine teamed up with fellow coach on The Voice, Christina Aguilera, to perform Moves Like Jagger – a new song from Maroon 5’s Hands All Over album. The song became a smash hit around the world and is one of those songs you just know you’ll be playing at parties in 20 years time. Moves Like Jagger is one of the highest selling digital singles of all time, selling more than 14 million copies and was a chart success all over the world. The song was the first big hit for Maroon 5 following the band’s move into a more electro-pop/synth sound. The reception – both from fans and music critics – suggests the band’s reinvention has been a successful one. While narrowing down the many Maroon 5 hits was a tall order, selecting Moves Like Jagger as number one on our list was easy. We love it – we hope you do too.
