Music / Announce
It really is a beautiful day – Irish rockers U2 have announced a second Auckland date has been added to their Joshua Tree tour in New Zealand this November.
For this first time since 2010, Irish rockers U2 are on their way back to New Zealand shores and they’re bringing their highly-anticipated Joshua Tree tour with them.
The new show will take place on Saturday 9 November at Mt Smart Stadium, the night after the original show. Please not, all general admission tickets for this sow will be digital mobile only.
Featuring songs like ‘Where The Streets Have No Name’, ‘I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For’, ‘With or Without You’, and ‘Sweetest Thing’, U2’s 1987 album The Joshua Tree took the band from much-loved heroes to absolute international superstars.
The record topped the charts in over 20 countries, saw the band perform in stadiums for the first time in their career, and earned them two Grammys in 1988 (for Album of the Year and Best Rock Performance by a Duo or a Group with Vocal). Now, more than 30 years later, The Joshua Tree has well and truly cemented itself as one of the greatest albums of all time.
U2 frontman Bono cannot wait to get back to our side of the world, saying of the announce, “It’s only taken me 30 years to learn how to sing these songs and it’s great to be able to say that I’ve finally caught up with the band. Our audience has given the Joshua Tree a whole new life on this tour.
“Doing these shows has been very special for us, a lot of emotion. From the despair of how relevant some of the dark songs still are, to the joy and pure fun of the staging – it’s quite a ride. And now we get to do it all over again.”
“We really wanted to bring The Joshua Tree to New Zealand [and] Australia. We promised we would and finally, now we can say that we will see you in November,” The Edge added.
If this news wasn’t enough, U2 have also announced that none other than Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds will be coming along as the support act for the Australian and New Zealand dates, and Noel is pretty stoked about it, saying, “We, NGHFB, are beside ourselves. The Joshua Tree 2017 Tour was some of the most fun we ever had. It will be both an honour and a pleasure to share the stage with our friends and comrades once again. It’s gonna be a ripper.”
In a first for any artist performing in New Zealand and Australia, and to ensure fans have the best access, floor tickets for all of U2’s Australian and New Zealand shows will be digital. Not only does this improve your experience getting into the venue on show day, digital-only tickets also means less scalping, safer and easier transfer to friends, and a better environmental outcome with less waste.
