The hills are alive with the sound of music….

The hills are well and live folks. Are you excited? No? Well, what if I told you the eight time Tony Award Winner and record breaking production The Sound of Music is coming to New Zealand this October to enchant and pour magical music dust all over its audiences? Excited? Yes? Excellent!

The worlds’ most famous musical will be gracing the Civic stage on October 3rd  to October 19th giving us all ample time to “buy, steal or beg,” for tickets! The Sound of Music tells the uplifting true story of Maria, the fun-loving governess who changes the lives of the widowed Captain von Trapp and his seven children by re-introducing them to music, culminating in the family’s escape across the mountains from Austria. This acclaimed production of the legendary Rodgers and Hammerstein and revived by the amazingly talented and legend in his own right Andrew Lloyd Webber, premiered at the home of West End musical theatre – the London Palladium with a record breaking 954 performances and audiences well over 2 million before its breakthrough onto the international stage.

Lesley Garrett.  Featuring one of the UK’s most successful sopranos and recording musical artists- playing Mother Abbess  is Lesley Garrett whose career spans decades including 14 solo CDs to her credit. Her lead roles include  shows the Royal Opera at Convent Garden in London and English National Opera at the London Coliseum,  she has also performed internationally in over 9 countries worldwide

Bethany Dickson as Sandy

 Maria will be played by Bethany Dickson, who having just completed a box office hit season of The Sound of Music in South Africa was last in New Zealand playing the roles of Sandy in the smash-hit Grease. Joining the 30-strong international cast will be a total of 18 talented young New Zealand actors playing the roles of six of the seven Von Trapp children, in the opportunity of a lifetime!

THE SOUND OF MUSIC plays host to some of the most memorable songs ever performed on the musical theatre stage, including Sixteen Going on Seventeen, Climb Ev’ry Mountain, The Lonely Goatherd, My Favorite Things, The Sound of Music, Do-Re-Mi and Edelweiss sure to tug at the heart strings and send us all walking down memory lane.
