Julia Jacklin – Head Alone
Following the release of slow-burning heartbreak Body last month, Julia Jacklin has returned with Head Alone and the news that she’ll be following up her gorgeous debut album Don’t Let The Kids Win next February. Head Alone –the second taste of her new album Crushing – was written about finally feeling free after being on the road, in confined spaces with people, for nearly two years. She’ll bring the album to The Forum, Melbourne next March – tickets available here.
Sasha Sloan – Older
Even if you don’t know her by name, we’re certain you’re familiar with Sasha Sloan. She’s lent her velvety vocals to tracks like Kygo’s This Town and Odesza’s Falls and has co-written with everyone from Charli XCX to Camila Cabello and Troye Sivan. But it’s on her self-proclaimed #sadgirl tunes that Sasha really shines. She wrote Older while she was in Germany, and it is packed with emotion. As well as releasing her debut EP earlier this year, she’s also released a string of standalone single and Older is definitely the shining light of the bunch.
Methyl Ethel – Real Tight
Surreal art-rockers Methyl Ethel have announced their third album Triage will be out on Friday 15 February. Following on from the first delicious taste Scream Whole, they’ve now shared new single Real Tight. While the singles are vastly different, they both show off the weirdly wonderful creative prowess of Methyl Ethel auteur, Jake Webb.
Montaigne – For Your Love
We’ve been waiting a little while to hear new music from Montaigne – two years to be exact – but when she returns with stunning pop goodness like For Your Love – how can we even complain? If you listen along closely, you’ll hear some similar lines to those that feature in her 2016 single Because I Love You – Jess Cerro (the face behind Montaigne) has described this tune as a darker, more revealing sequel. As for a follow up to here 2015 debut album Glorious Heights, Montaigne says she’s polishing off her second studio album in time for a 2019 release.
Arno Faraji – things change
Fast-rising Aus hip-hop star Arno Faraji is back with another new single in things change. The 18-year-old Perth beat-maker, rapper, and multi-instrumentalist has come a long way in a very short amount of time, here showing off his knack for layering and balancing textures including haunting synths, tropical guitar lines and percussion, all while using his own voice in interesting ways. The track comes with the news that Arno has signed a management deal with Astral People – the Sydney crew who handle acts like Winston Surfshirt and Cosmo’s Midnight.
Ziggy Alberts – On Hold
It’s hard to pick just one slice of Ziggy Alberts’ fifth album Laps Around The Sun, but we’ve tried our best here with On Hold. Overall, the album is warm and familiar, something to settle in with and enjoy from start to finish. It was conceived in locations as diverse and spread apart as Ireland, Denmark, Norway, his parents’ home on the Sunshine Coast and even Falls Festival in Lorne. We chatted with Ziggy ahead of the album’s release and you can check it out here. Catch him live next Feb and March, tickets available here.
Gold Fields – Glow
They’re back, they’re really back and we are stoked about it. It feels like we’ve been waiting a hundred years to hear new music from Ballarat boys Gold Fields (their stunning debut Black Sun dropped back in 2013), but now we have three tasty cuts to keep us going until their sophomore album drops sometime next year. The EP, titled Glow, is a three-track 20-minute beauty but to ease you in here is a chopped down radio edit of the title track.
Spacey Jane – Sawteeth
If they aren’t already, Freo garage-pop outfit Spacey Jane are a band to definitely get on your radar pronto. Last Friday they dropped their sophomore EP In The Slight, and just as highlight track Sawteeth demonstrates Spacey Jane will be filling rooms around the country in no time. Catchy riffs, heartwrenching vocals, and gorgeous harmonies – what more could you want?
Billie Marten – Blue Sea, Red Sea
Delicate, simple, and sweet are the first three words that come to mind when sinking into Billie Marten’s Blue Sea, Red Sea. Of the creation process, Billie says, “I get S.A.D disorder real bad so my head was a bit blue. I decided to sit and write the happiest, simplest pop song I could.” Blue Sea Red Sea is the second taste of new material that Billie has shared since the release of her debut album Writing Of Blues And Yellows in September 2016.
Nilüfer Yanya – Heavyweight Champion of the Year
The latest single from London-based singer-songwriter Nilüfer Yanya may start off seeming like a slow-burner, but bubbling underneath it all is anger and exhaustion, and once you’re locked in, there’s no pulling back. In true Nilüfer fashion, her infectious guitar melodies and silky, brooding vocals are front and centre,
